THE CURSE OF HARRY KANE CONTINUES AS FOOTBALL'S UNLUCKIEST STAR ENDURES YET ANOTHER NEAR-MISS

It’s the curse of Kane.

No matter how brilliantly he does, Harry Kane still seems destined to finish without a trophy.

He must be one of the unluckiest players around to enjoy his best-ever season in his first campaign with the trophy-winning machine that is Bayern Munich, and still finish empty handed.

Maybe Kane might have thought all was not well when he lost the German Super Cup 3-0 to RB Leipzig on his Bayern debut.

Worse was to follow and Bayern were dumped out of the German Cup, the DFB-Pokal, by third-tier Saarbrucken when Kane was an unused sub.

Bayer Leverkusen ended their 11-year monopoly of the Bundesliga to win their first German title and now they have exited the Champions League in the cruellest of fashions.

Kane must have been dreaming of Wembley and the final when he came off after 85 minutes with, according to Thomas Tuchel a back injury, and Bayern winning 1-0.

Yet just six minutes later Bayern were stunned when Joselu, who did nothing at Stoke and Newcastle, scored twice to win the tie for Real.

For Kane, who turns 31 in July, it was just more misery to add to the pile that is stacking up in his career.

His near misses began when he lost the 2015 League Cup Final with Tottenham to Chelsea.

They continued when Spurs lost the 2019 Champions League Final to Liverpool.

Will Harry Kane win the Euros with England this summer? Have your say below.

These runners-up medals are all he won with Tottenham, despite finishing as the club’s all-time top scorer on 280 goals ahead of Jimmy Greaves.

His curse followed him to England and the Three Lions lost the Euro 2020 Final on penalties to Italy at Wembley, when they were the better team and should have won.

Having scored a record 62 goals for England, Kane deserves more.

Now Bayern have been struck down and he appeared certain to win his first trophy when he joined the Bundesliga giants last summer.

Instead they will finish empty handed for the first time since the 2011-12 campaign.

Of course, Kane’s curse should not detract from his achievements and Alan Shearer, the Premier League’s greatest striker, won just one title.

Gary Lineker won just one FA Cup with Tottenham in England, although he did lift the Spanish Cup and European Cup Winners’ Cup with Barcelona.

Sir Stanley Matthews, arguably England’s finest player, won the solitary FA Cup.

If he’s not England’s greatest, then Sir Tom Finney is and he won no major honours in his career with Preston and the Three Lions.

No-one thinks any less of these great talents because they did not win more in their careers and the same applies to Kane.

He is already Tottenham and England’s greatest goalscorer, no matter what else happens, and his place in the pantheon of legends is secure.

Anyway, Bayern will reboot under Thomas Tuchel’s successor and no doubt Kane will be hosting aloft a piece of silverware before his contact with them ends in 2027.
